At Art of Clean we specialise in keeping wooden floors looking their best whatever the weather but sometimes commercial building just need to invest in slip resistant mats …. it is interesting to note that multiple rolls slip resistant mats have been installed throughout the Royal Horticultural Society’s Glasshouse Nurseries at RHS Wisley. OK so the four large glasshouses that grow all the plants for the displays would need high performance safety mats, apparently the cheap rubber mat that had been used previously had become slippery due to the heat, humidity and large quantities of water needed for nurturing the tropical plants. As a result, the surface was no longer safe for nursery staff and the public who take part in guided tours.

At Wisley they had to resort to high profile sections to  enable the mat to straddle standing water with aggressive and deep etched surfaces to provide an effective slip resistant surface, even when wet..  At Art of Clean we are not suggesting all commercial floors have the same wear and tear but spare a though for your wooden floors this winter and maybe consider protecting them so Art of Clean can keep them looking as good as new.

Original, structural pine floors in period properties suffer all sorts of abuse over the years, from woodworm, insensitive electricians and plumbers to overzealous DIY alterations. Often an old pine floor is no more than a jigsaw puzzle of loose, worn and damaged boards with ‘stray’ new pine boards sticking out like a sore thumb.  Often unused hearths in front of chimney breasts can be an eyesore, and break up the continuity of a stripped Victorian pine floor it is often best to break-up these hearths, install joist work, lift and stagger the original boards, mixing in reclaimed material to give a neat and imperceptible finish. As with so many things, the success of the final finish is 70% dependent on the preparation & restoration work carried out before the sanding machines are ever turned on.

Much of the time it is all about being practical- first remove dirt and grit, we vacuum, dry mop or sweep to remove any loose dirt or grit. If you vacuum, we use a soft brush attachment. It is important to make sure all the mops or pads are rinsed with water and wrung out thoroughly before cleaning with any cleaning products.

Some of the most common tips on how to clean the most often occurring flooring especially in restaurants or food outlets are at our fingertips.  If you have ceramic tiles you have to make sure you do not use harsh abrasive cleaners that might scratch the tiles. Instead use a damp-mop on the ceramic tiles with a food all-purpose cleaner. Then dry the floor with a soft cloth to avoid streaks.  If your restaurant has Vinyl floors the best way to clean it is with an all-purpose cleaning solution. Wood floors are most effectively cleaned by applying a liquid wood-floor cleaner with a dry wax applicator on a small area at a time. Let it soak for a few minutes, and wipe up the excess. When the floor is dry, buff with a floor polisher. It has been observed in some studies that most restaurant workers use damp mopping to clean the floors, i.e. they pass a damp mop (wet with the wash water but not dripping) over the floor and leave it to dry. Typically, the mop spends less than a second on a given area so that the ingredients of the floor cleaner do not have much time to work on the accumulated fat. To increase the contact time for the floor cleaner to act, a two-step cleaning method should be used.

In the first step, cleaning solution is applied to a section of the flooring with a wet mop (almost dripping). In the second step, the cleaning solution and the dirt it dislodged is recovered using a wrung-out mop. Between the application and the removal, the cleaning solution works on the dirt and improves the cleaning efficiency. Moreover, the recovery of the cleaning solution with a wrung-out mop leaves about one third less liquid on the floor than damp mopping alone so that it dries faster.

Although this investigation did not cover all the parameters that may affect the floor cleaning efficiency, it shows that simple actions such as changing the floor cleaning procedure may produce up to a seven-fold improvement of the floor cleaning efficiency, which in turn should result in less slippery and safer floors.
