If the little darlings get something unthinkable on the carpet or sofa the first thing to do is sponge with cold water and blot dry, then use carpet or upholstery shampoo, adding a little disinfectant to the rinse water if you need to. If the smell lingers, try a deodorising spray. This might be fine for one or two occasions but if you have been having a run of “accidents” specialist upholstery and carpet cleaners for Cambridgeshire Art of clean can come and really freshen up your carpets or furniture.

A tip for mattresses that have suffered an “accident” it to put the mattress on its side and sponge the area with a solution of cold water and washing up liquid, taking care not to get it too wet. Put a few drops of disinfectant onto a wet cloth and lightly wipe over the surface.

Cut fingers or scraped knees are also unavoidable and the furnishings are probably the last thing on your mind. If you get blood on fabric you can dab with a cloth dipped in cold water (never warm/hot). From upholstery or the carpet some people recommend that you cover the spot with a paste of flour or talcum powder and water. Rub gently, allow to dry, then brush off or let the Art of clean specialists sort it out for you.

Oiled timbers are usually tropical hardwoods, such as teak, or beech. Oil, such as linseed, teak oil or Danish oil should be applied with a fluff-free cloth, left to soak in then wiped clean. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for the appropriate oil and frequency of oiling. Stains and marks on wooden furniture: alcohol spots and watermarks can be removed with a cream metal polish (test on an inconspicuous area first), then faded areas can be disguised with ash or shoe polish; grease marks on unsealed wood can be sprinkled with good old talc, which you then cover with kitchen paper and press with a warm iron to absorb the grease; fill in small scratches with matching coloured wax crayon or shoe polish.

If you get curry on your carpet you can apply a stain-removal treatment immediately then shampoo the carpet. From upholstery seek professional help, or try dabbing with a hydrogen peroxide solution (always test on an inconspicuous area first). Let’s hope you didn’t spill your beer as well as it can leave a bad stain and an even more unpleasant smell if not treated properly.  From carpets beer needs to be soaked up and washed down. Older stains may improve if you dab them with methylated spirits. On the sofa you can sponge beer spills with warm water or a 1:5 solution of clear vinegar and water, taking care not to get the fabric too wet.
